Today, a New York Times story revealed the existence of secret torture memos, and a level of duplicity in the Bush administration suspected — but still unbelievable. As the ACLU’s Executive Director Anthony Romero put it on the Huffington Post,

these memos are the direct products of the machinations of an administration that basically “shopped” for the torture legal opinions it sought — discarding attorneys who were not compliant, and holding close those who rubberstamped the views of Vice President Cheney by coming up with legal justifications — no matter how far-fetched — for torturing people.

The ACLU also released a statement about the revelations. Learn more about our work on torture at www.aclu.org/torture
