An NYPD official testified that information collected during a six year NYPD spying program targeting Muslim American communities throughout the northeastern United States did not produce leads that initiated any terrorism investigations. The NYPD Demographics Unit, now called the Zone Assessment Unit, infiltrated Muslim communities and monitored individuals based on First Amendment-protected criteria such as religion, nationality, language spoken, and political views. The program’s failure illustrates that racial or religious profiling and suspicion-less surveillance are ineffective in crime prevention and violate innocent individuals’ constitutional rights.
