September 11
UPHOLDING FREEDOM IN CHALLENGING TIMES Seven years after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the ACLU joins all Americans in remembering the unspeakable losses suffered on that tragic day. This is an ideal time to reflect on the values that define our great nation, such as fairness, due process, and the rule of law. Unfortunately, the Bush administration's relentless assaults on our civil liberties since that day neither do those values justice nor achieve it. Building on the fear and uncertainty that followed the September 11 attacks, the Bush administration has repeatedly violated the spirit and the letter of our laws — condoning torture, spying on innocent Americans, and censoring speech. Since 1920, the ACLU and its members have worked to preserve our democracy — our America — in the most difficult of times. We have no intention of stopping now. We must never get so lost in what we are fighting against, that we forget what we are fighting for.
