ACLU Comment on Equal Rights Amendment Passage in Virginia
RICHMOND, Va. — The Equal Rights Amendment passed in the Virginia General Assembly today, making Virginia the 38th state needed to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment in the U.S. Constitution.
The ERA would ban discrimination on the basis of sex and guarantee legal protection against sex-based discrimination under the U.S. Constitution.
Ria Tabacco Mar, director of the Women’s Rights Project at the ACLU, had the following response:
“Virginia’s ratification of the ERA is a milestone toward ensuring that ‘we the people’ includes all of us.
“The vast majority of Americans support the ERA, but the Trump administration is trying to block gender equality from becoming part of the fabric of our nation. It’s 2020, not 1920. It’s long past time to update our laws and policies to make sex equality not only the law, but the reality for people of all genders.”
