ACLU Comment on Trump Administration Plan to Prohibit Many Asylum Applications

NEW YORK — The Trump administration today issued an emergency regulation under which it plans to prohibit many individuals from applying for asylum in the United States.

Omar Jadwat, director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, had this reaction:

“U.S. law specifically allows individuals to apply for asylum whether or not they are at a port of entry. It is illegal to circumvent that by agency or presidential decree.”
