ACLU Demands Release of Egyptian Human Rights Leaders

NEW YORK — American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Anthony D. Romero today issued the following statement in response to the Egyptian government’s arrest of Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) Executive Director Gasser Abdel Razek:

“Because President Trump has cozied up to strongmen leaders across the globe, the Egyptian government believes it can jail the country’s leading human rights activists with impunity. The incoming Biden administration must work quickly to restore U.S. leadership in the world on human rights. Gasser Abdel Razek and his staff should be immediately released.”

EIPR is the ACLU’s sister organization in Egypt — advocating for the rights of all people in that country. EIPR and the ACLU are also founding members of the International Network for Civil Liberties Organizations (INCLO).
