ACLU Launches New Trump and Vote By Mail TV Ad

WASHINGTON — The American Civil Liberties Union launched a new six-figure television ad that highlights President Trump and administration officials who vote by mail juxtaposed with their recent attacks on the U.S. Postal Service and mail voting. The ad will run on MSNBC during the Democratic National Convention, and touts the ACLU’s work to ensure voters have access to the ballot, whether they choose to vote in-person or by mail. The ACLU has filed 20 lawsuits to protect the right to vote during the COVID-19 pandemic and has political advocacy campaigns ongoing across the country, including in Georgia, Florida, Nevada, and North Carolina.

The following is a statement from Ronald Newman, national political director for ACLU:

“In an election year where voters are facing unprecedented challenges, which sadly include a president trying to suppress voter turnout, the ACLU is working round the clock to ensure voters have access to the ballot box. Our democracy works best when all eligible voters can cast their ballot — by mail, early in-person, or on Election Day — and we’ll keep fighting to preserve and expand that baseline right and protect our democracy.”

The ad will run in the D.C., Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle markets.

“Let People Vote,” an ACLU vote by mail educational tool to help voters protect their health and their civil liberties this election cycle, will feature general election information for all 50 states and D.C., and allows users to learn about their respective state’s access to vote by mail.

“Protecting and expanding the right to vote is not new for the ACLU. In 2018, we won a ballot measure in Michigan, which brought no excuse absentee voting and same day registration to the state. We helped push through similarly significant ballot measures in Florida and Nevada. Consequently, voters in these key jurisdictions are better placed to safely register and access the ballot this year. If turnout levels in recent primaries are a guide, and we can prevent undue barriers from being erected, American democracy will shine this fall,” concluded Newman.
