NEW YORK – In response to the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Anthony D. Romero issued the following statement:

“President Jimmy Carter’s commitment to the world and all its people shone through his deeds.

“A global champion of human rights, President Carter centered human rights in U.S. foreign policy throughout his presidency and led by example when he signed a number of human rights treaties.

“After his presidency, he continued championing human rights through The Carter Center, which included fighting for peaceful solutions to violent conflicts, free and fair elections at home and abroad, freedom for political prisoners, increasing opportunities for the disadvantaged, houses for the unhoused, due process for detainees, and much more.

“During the Obama administration, the ACLU was proud to have President Carter’s support in our efforts to uphold the prohibition against torture under U.S. and international law.

“Today we, along with the Carter family and millions of people across the nation and around the world, mourn the loss of a president and a patriot, a humble peanut farmer, and a humanitarian.”
