NEW YORK — The American Civil Liberties Union is deeply saddened by the loss of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, an iconic leader in the fight for civil rights in America. In remembrance of his legacy, Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director of the ACLU, shared the following statement:

“The passing of the Rev. Jesse Jackson is a profound loss for everyone committed to ensuring our nation lives up to its highest ideals. For more than half a century, Rev. Jackson stood firmly at the intersection of faith, democracy, and justice. He devoted his life to widening the circles of who counts, who belongs, and who has power.

“Rev. Jackson demanded that the promise of equality belong to everyone and believed deeply that our democracy is strongest when no one is excluded. He organized alongside the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., linked arms with working people, expanded the democratic process through two groundbreaking presidential runs, and forged new paths for Black political participation and representation. Our nation is stronger because Rev. Jackson pressed, time after time, for a more inclusive and truly democratic future.

“Rev. Jackson was a valued partner, advisor, and friend of the ACLU. He never missed an opportunity to act decisively when his voice and strength were needed. Together, we worked extensively to protect voting rights and strengthen safeguards that made our elections freer and fairer. Whenever he encouraged movements and those in power to do more for Black voters and other communities of color, it was a clarion call that could not be ignored.

“Rev. Jackson leaves behind a towering legacy of courage, perseverance, and moral leadership. The ACLU remains grateful for his lifetime of service to our nation. Our hearts are with his family, colleagues, and all who loved and admired him.”
