ACLU Statement on Report of Trump Administration Rollback of Anti-Discrimination Rules

NEW YORK — The Trump administration is considering rolling back anti-discrimination rules in education, housing, and other areas, according to The Washington Post. The disparate impact regulations are intended to identify and fight practices that harm people of color, women, and other groups subject to discrimination.

Jeff Robinson, American Civil Liberties Union deputy legal director, had the following reaction:

“Disparate impact is a critical framework to secure opportunities and equality for people of color, women, and others struggling under the weight of present-day and historical discrimination. It is shameful that this administration is considering dismantling tools to fight discrimination rather than using its power to foster respect for the dignity and equality of all people.

“Signs of bias in decision-making are often hidden to protect against civil rights enforcement. The federal government should use its civil rights enforcement powers to ensure a level playing field for all Americans.”
