WASHINGTON — The Trump administration today announced a new section in the Department of Justice’s Office of Immigration Litigation focused exclusively on denaturalizations of American citizens.

The following is a statement from Manar Waheed, senior legislative and advocacy counsel for the ACLU:

“This new Department of Justice unit, focused solely on stripping Americans of their citizenship, confirms that Trump’s systematic campaign against people of color extends from our borders to the rest of the nation. His administration has filed three times as many civil denaturalization cases annually compared to the last eight administrations’ yearly averages. His effort to create an environment of fear and insecurity is chilling. That is not the America we want to be.”
