ACLU of Texas Statement on Voters Sending Message Against Hate
HOUSTON — Amidst anti-immigrant rhetoric in the political arena, voters all over Texas used their power on Election Day to vote out legislators with a history of discrimination against immigrant communities.
Sharon Watkins Jones, director of political strategies for the ACLU of Texas, had the following reaction:
“The ACLU of Texas is proud to see voters focusing on candidates that reflect our values of protecting civil rights and liberties for all. In House District 47, 105, and 115, voters pushed back against legislators that discriminated against Texans by threatening to call ICE on protesters at the State Capitol, supported racist show-me-your-papers policies, and proposed immigration policies that are callous and cruel.
“We welcome new lawmakers, Vicki Goodwin, Thresa Meza and Julie Johnson who have committed to upholding the rights of all Texans, and we will continue to hold accountable each person elected to serve.”
