The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued a unanimous ruling this evening, refusing to reinstate President Trump’s travel ban against refugees and people from Muslim-majority countries. The appeal is in response to a case challenging the ban brought by the states of Washington and Minnesota. The New York Civil Liberties Union has assisted immigrants directly affected by the ban.

This past weekend, NYCLU attorneys worked tirelessly to secure the entry of two Iranian citizens studying in New York. The students had been detained at JFK Airport the weekend prior and had been sent back to their points of origin.

The following statement is attributable to NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman.

“President Trump’s ban on the entry of refugees and people from predominantly-Muslim nations is not only unlawful, but it is an affront to the American ideals of tolerance, openness, religious freedom and opportunity. We applaud the decision of the Ninth Circuit to preserve these values and to keep the ban blocked. The NYCLU has worked directly with those affected by Trump’s unlawful ban, and we have witnessed their fear and heartache over having their lives and their hopes upended. We will continue to fight against this cruelty.”
