NYCLU Statement on I-81 Draft Environmental Impact Statement
NEW YORK – Today, New York State Department of Transportation released its draft environmental impact statement, which evaluates possible alternatives for replacing the I-81 viaduct in downtown Syracuse.
The following statement is attributable to Project Counsel Lanessa Chaplin:
“Now that the State Department of Transportation has signaled that the community grid is the preferred option to replace I-81 it is imperative that the DOT listen closely to those who raise their concerns during the comment period, particularly those who currently live near the viaduct. Simply removing the viaduct will not bring an end to the inequality that surrounds our city. It must be done equitably.”
