The NYPD is installing automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) on every bridge and tunnel on Manhattan as its latest step toward imposing a “ring of steel” surveillance program. The information from the ALPRs will be stored in the Domain Awareness System, where it can be combined with information collected with surveillance cameras and camera helicopters. The NYPD is also considering flying unmanned drones over the city in order to monitor demonstrations.
