Opponents of Bill Allowing Discrimination Prepare for Public Hearing
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:CONTACT: 212 549-2666, media@aclu.orgKANSAS CITY – A controversial and unnecessary bill that would force public universities to support student organizations that discriminate will face a hearing on Monday, March 30, before the House Committee on Federal and State Affairs. The hearing on SB 175 is expected to draw wide-ranging opposition. The bill would require public colleges to fund discrimination by student groups – against racial and ethnic groups, women, LGBT students, or anyone else that a student group decides to exclude on the basis of religious belief.”The issue at stake in SB 175 is not whether student organizations are free to believe and associate as they like – they are. Instead, the issue is whether student organizations have a right to be publicly funded to operate in a discriminatory manner. They should not,” said Micah W. Kubic, executive director of the ACLU of Kansas.WHO: ACLU of Kansas and other opponents of SB 175WHAT: Public hearing for SB 175WHEN: 9 a.m., Monday, March 30WHERE: State Capitol Room 346-SFor more information about SB 175, contact Micah Kubic at: (816) 994-3314
