ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Today, the University of New Mexico (UNM) renewed (un)Occupy Albuquerque’s protest permit for Yale Park on the UNM campus. The new permit is valid through November 6, and allows for the use of the park as a forum for protest on weekdays from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico was involved in facilitating the balancing of protesters’ First Amendment rights with the university’s desire to impose reasonable restrictions on the time, place and manner of the protest.
“We are pleased that the university and the (un)Occupy protesters have reached an agreement that upholds the people’s First Amendment right to use public space to assemble and protest the government,” said ACLU of New Mexico Managing Attorney Laura Schauer Ives. “The ACLU of New Mexico will continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure that these rights remain intact.”
