Written Testimony Submitted to the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing

Document Date: November 8, 2009

In November 2009, ACLU clients and attorneys presented written and oral testimony to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Ms. Raquel Rolnick, during her 18-day official mission to the United States to investigate housing rights violations. This was the first official visit to the U.S by a U.N. Special Rapporteur on Housing. WRP presented this written testimony, including the personal testimony of three of our clients, about the housing discrimination faced by domestic violence survivors, women with criminal convictions, and women living in public housing whose family members have criminal histories. These forms of housing discrimination disproportionately affect women of color and low-income women. The Special Rapporteur will issue a report with her findings and recommendations to the United Nations Human Rights Council in March 2010.
