The ACLU joined a coalition letter to the House Committee on the Judiciary and the Senate Committee on the Judiciary asking for the release of people in federal prison for “old law” offenses in order to address the public health threat of COVID-19. 236 people in federal prison are serving parole-eligible sentences and could be released immediately by the U.S. Parole Commission. They are in federal prison, therefore uniquely vulnerable to infection from COVID-19, pose no threat to public safety, and should be released as soon as possible.
