ACLU Comments in Response to Bureau of Prisons Notice for Proposed Changes to its Regulations on Compassionate Release (cite 81 FR 36485-01)

Compassionate release is one of a few policies that the Department of Justice can use to reduce the number of people in federal prisons. We support the proposed changes to BOP regulations because it is an example of the federal government using its authority to reduce its prison population safely. BOP’s proposed changes to the policy will position the agency to better evaluate people who no longer pose a public safety risk and could be released.
