February 4, 2008

Today at 3 p.m. EST, Deborah Vagins, Policy Counsel for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at our Washington Legislative Office, will participate in a chat on Firedoglake on the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, legislation spawned after the Supreme Court's horrible decision last year in Ledbetter v. Goodyear.

In that decision, the Court ruled that women who receive lower pay than men for the same job cannot seek relief under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act unless they sue within 180 days of the initial discriminatory salary decision, even if she did not know at the time what other employees were earning. The Fair Pay Act would repudiate this ruling and provide pay discrimination relief under Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990, and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
