Great you say, but it’s California — a state viewed as especially liberal. A closer look at the survey, however, reveals that the eighty-nine percent figure cuts across political and religious views. Liberals and conservatives, evangelicals and atheists, they all want their children to have information on both abstinence and how to protect against unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Furthermore, the study, conducted by the Public Health Institute, shows that an astounding ninety-six percent of parents oppose abstinence-only requirements in schools. The San Jose Mercury News has an article on the survey and reports that the full study will be published in the September issue of Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health.
