NEW YORK — President Trump issued a proclamation tonight extending his asylum ban order, which would have expired today. However, the ban remains blocked by a preliminary injunction obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union, Southern Poverty Law Center, and Center for Constitutional Rights late last year.

The lawsuit was brought on behalf of East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, Al Otro Lado, Innovation Law Lab, and the Central American Resource Center in Los Angeles.

Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, had this reaction:

“The Trump administration has issued this extension of its draconian asylum ban, but the ban remains illegal and is still blocked by the courts.”
