WASHINGTON – Representative Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-VA) today hosted a crime summit entitled, “Smart on Crime Policies: Increase Public Safety, Reduce Costs, and Improve Lives.” The half-day forum included three panels, each exploring a different aspect of crime policy including prevention/intervention, sentencing alternatives and the collateral consequences of criminal convictions.

The following can be attributed to Jennifer Bellamy, ACLU Legislative Counsel:

“With one in every 31 adults in the United States under some form of correctional control, it has become painfully clear that something is wrong with our nation’s criminal justice system. Representative Bobby Scott’s crime summit offers a fresh look at policy choices that increase public safety and yield impressive cost savings while providing much needed reform.

“Today’s summit drew a policy roadmap for improving our criminal justice system from the shared knowledge and experiences of a broad coalition of organizations and leaders.”
