This coalition letter was submitted May 24 for the record of a Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training oversight hearing on the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). The subcommittee, part of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, convened the hearing following a recent investigation by the CNCS Office of Inspector General (OIG), which reported that a few AmeriCorps members provided emotional support to women during abortion procedures at several New York City community health centers. The letter details the OIG’s overly broad interpretation of the Serve America Act’s restriction on “providing abortion services or referrals for receipt of such services,” as well as the harmful ramifications of this misinterpretation of law.
