Recommendations for Review of Mexico City Policy

Document Date: August 9, 2017

“The ACLU and more than 100 other groups signed onto this statement of recommendations for the six-month review of the Mexico City Policy, which President Trump reinstated and expanded this year. It requires foreign non-governmental organizations to certify that they will not use their own funds to provide information, referrals, or services for legal abortion or to advocate for access to abortion services in their own country as a condition of receiving U.S. global health assistance.

The State Department in May committed to undertake a six-month review, and this letter calls on the department to instead conduct reviews on an annual basis while the policy is in place in order to capture its long-term impacts. It also provides a set of recommendations for the review’s approach and substance.”
