ACLU Comment on Nationwide Ban on Abortion Introduced in the U.S. Senate
WASHINGTON — A nationwide ban on abortion was introduced today in the U.S. Senate that would eliminate access to care after 15 weeks of pregnancy. In response to the bill introduced by Sen. Lindsey Graham, Julie Sweet, director of the Liberty Division of the American Civil Liberties Union, issued the following statement:
“This is a transparent attempt by Sen. Graham and extreme politicians to force the nightmare unfolding across the country on people in every state in the country. Make no mistake, this bill signals the dangerous future we face if anti-abortion extremists take control of Congress. Anti-abortion extremists won’t be satisfied until abortion care is banned completely across the country and women are forced to carry pregnancies against their will.
“The disconnect between the overwhelming majority of their constituents that support abortion access and the politicians pushing severe bans on abortion is alarming for our democracy as it is life-threatening for the many women and people who need abortion care. The decision to get an abortion shouldn’t belong to politicians — it should belong to the people. We won’t stop fighting these attempts to take away our reproductive freedom and will continue mobilizing supporters across the country to send politicians the clear message that our fundamental rights aren’t pawns in their political games.”
